It's both a new development and an old one: when wristwatches came on the scene in the early 1900s, women's models took on a range of wild shapes before settling into the more staid rounds and rectangles of later decades. Now, once again, it's anything goes, with flower shapes (from Tissot and Citizen, among others), crosses (Roger Dubuis, Locman), egg shaped (Breguet), long rectangles curved to fit the wrist (cK), semicircles (Jean d'Eve) and ovals (from companies too numerous to mention). Van Cleef & Arpels even has a watch shaped like the Alhambra in Spain. So-called east-west watches, which are wider than they are high, are gaining fashion momentum. They're available now in oval, rectangle and tonneau shapes, with more variations on the way.

Take Your Watches to a Watch Repair Shop!

I love watches and had a great collection of favorite watches that had problems. There were so many that they had their own resting place - a great old man's jewelry chest. (I mean the chest was great and old, not the man.) There was a Gucci watch and a diamond studded watch and several heirloom watches. Some of them might have just needed batteries but have you ever looked at the range of batteries available. I mentioned the watches at work one day and one of my colleagues told me about the watch repair shop that had been operating for generations near her home.

Watch repair seemed to be one of those things that a person could do herself (or himself) but it is not for the lazy or the technically-challenged. In honesty, battery replacement could have been enabled if I had taken the watches to a shop so that I could find the right batteries. Or I could have opened the watches and figured out which watch needed what battery. But this is not as simple or easy as it sounds. If I had gone and bought a dozen batteries for the dozen watches, I might not have running watches because who knows what the problems were. Only a watch repair professional could answer that question.

As for removing the batteries myself, I could, but good watch repair tools are costly and cheap tools might not do the job right and I could just end up scratching my head. The screws in those watches are calibrated for proper functioning and cheap screw drivers could really mess them up.

There are many reasons why we like watches. Sure, some people wear a watch for functional reasons and can buy cheap throwaway watches. Others like watches for sentimental reasons or for fashion reasons. For me it is a combination of sentiment, fashion, and money. I would rather have a good watch that lasts a lifetime.

I bundled my watches up and took them to the watch repair shop. Five of them needed batteries but they also needed a good cleaning. A couple of the others needed some adjusting. Three were just clogged with dirt. Only one needed to be rebuilt entirely. I also had a couple of straps replaced.

All of my watches are now running and sparkling after an external cleaning by a professional watch repair person. I figure if you are going to own something, you might as well respect it and if you don't have the right watch repair tools, there are always professionals who can do it for you!

The band is a little stiff at first, but breaks in after about a day of wearing, as leather should. I would definitely recommend this watch for someone wanting a professional, but not delicate, black faced watch.

How can you tell if the Eco-Drive watch is getting enough light?
In normal use, the watch displays the time and the sweep-second hand moves in one second intervals. A very important feature of Eco-Drive is the Low Charge Warning Mode which as a result of low battery voltage, causes the second hand to jump two seconds at a time (while still keeping correct time).

How long will an Eco-Drive watch run after it is fully charged?
If your watch is put away where no light is available to it while in a fully charged state, depending on the model, it will run for from 45 days to 5 years.

How can the Eco-Drive watch be recharged?
Besides sunlight, it can be safely charged by exposing it to a fluorescent desk lamp, with the dial (face) up and within about 8 inches or an incandescent lamp (regular light bulb) no closer than 20 inches. Never use a halogen lamp since the heat generated by it can cause damage to your watch. The most efficient and the quickest is in direct bright sunlight (not windowsill) and never on the dashboard of a car.
